Welcome to the first ever blog post for Springstone Farm!! I am Tiago, a sustainability student at Kean University and the Project Manager for this Senior Capstone. The School of Environmental and Sustainability Sciences (SESS) program requires us to take a Senior Capstone course, which involves us working as a mock environmental consulting firm for a specific client that is given to us. We have been “contracted” by Springstone Farms to help them become become even more sustainable than they already are.

Throughout this academic spring semester, our firm will be posting one blog every week so that you can learn about our work with Springstone Farm through our eyes. Our blog will allow you to gain a better understanding of Springstone farm’s sustainability initiatives and how they are implemented. Our firm has split into four different subgroups to tackle four different concerns: farming techniques to improve soil quality, harvesting rainwater and using it for irrigation, using solar power to heat water for an outdoor shower, and finally, implementing a hydroponic system to grow microgreens. Each team is comprised of 2-3 people working on each individual task, gathering information and figuring out the best possible solution in the short time frame we were given (end of the semester).

We have only just begun getting into this project and we couldn't be more excited to work with Springstone Farm owner, Joe Simmons. So stick with us throughout these next few months as we continue on our journey of learning about environmental consultation and also about what it takes to run a sustainable farm. If you have an questions or suggestions for us, please don’t hesitate to write a comment down below. I Hope you stick around and join us on our adventure, until next time.

Exciting work you will be doing on the farm! You will love those animals and collecting rainwater and healthy soil will certainly help every farmer! Love this idea!
