​Hydroponics involves growing plants without having to use soil. Soil’s function while growing plants is to hold water and food for the plants to uptake; hydroponics creates an easier and more efficient way for plants to get everything they need. Hydroponic mediums hold the water and nutrients for plants. Some examples of good hydroponic mediums are: clay pebbles, oasis cubes, coconut fiber, sand and peat moss. Most hydroponic mediums are either biodegradable, compostable or can be reused.

Hey! It’s awesome to have you all following our progress through the Springstone Farm blog. I am Bruce, also an Environmental Biology student at Kean University. As mentioned above by our project manager Tiago, we are creating more possibilities and options for our client to progress toward sustainability in order to provide more quality organic food and other organic products for the community. In my group, our focus in the project is to design and modify a storage system which will harvest rainwater to be used for crops.

Welcome to the first ever blog post for Springstone Farm!! I am Tiago, a sustainability student at Kean University and the Project Manager for this Senior Capstone. The School of Environmental and Sustainability Sciences (SESS) program requires us to take a Senior Capstone course, which involves us working as a mock environmental consulting firm for a specific client that is given to us. We have been “contracted” by Springstone Farms to help them become become even more sustainable than they already are.
