Before retiring December, 2016, Joe led technology initiatives in Kenya, Haiti, Jamaica and other developing countries. He made eleven trips to Kenya alone. In response to the Somali refugee crisis in 2011-2012, Joe managed a project to significantly improve the connectivity in the Dadaab refugee camp: short video here. Joe also traveled to Haiti immediately after the earthquake with a team of engineers to reconnect the local humanitarian organizations. In 2010, Joe camped for two weeks in Kenya's Masai Mare and visited the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, Green Belt Movement, Giraffe Centre and other conservation projects. These experiences affected Joe's sense of social responsibility.
